HAPPY EASTER TO ALL

I reckon this is an important holiday to Christians. It must be because there will be more in church today than any other Sunday of the Year. Which makes me wonder, I know very little about the Seven Day Adventists except that they claim the Sabbath is on Saturday. Do they celebrate Easter Saturday and Good Thursday?

I have some good--and bad--memories of Easter Sunday when I was a kid. The good memories include the new clothes. We always got some new duds to deck out with on Easter Sunday to go show them off at the local Southern Baptist church house. I never was too crazy about that damn bow tie and white shirt but I always did welcome a new pair of Lee Riders or Levis and a new pair of Converse Tennis shoes. (Those old shoes were getting kind of smelly by Easter.)

Sunday morning services on Easter were something to marvel at. Not the preacher..he would lull you to sleep as usual and just about the time one dozed off he would let out a yell to set you up in the seat... It was the fancy hats that all of the women wore on Easter. You ain't never seen the like! Feathers and fruit and little clay birds and ribbons and bows. I always tried to stay outside as long as I could so I wouldn't have to sit with the family and could slip in and sit on a back pew and get a good view of the hats. And if I got to laughing too much I could just duck down and no one would see me...

Easter Sunday dinner was always Ham. I have no idea why but ham it was. Generally there was the last couple of quart jars of canned string beans as well as the last of the pickled beets and some other veggies from last summers garden. The little ones ate fast and couldn't hardly wait for the big event and the most important part of Easter for them--the egg hunt!

Now the only part of the egg hunt that I liked was eating them. I was blind as a bat anyway and the only way I ever found a damn egg was to step on it-crunch-better eat this one before it spoils. This was before the chocolate eggs and little bunnies. It was colored hen eggs and once in a while someone would slip in a couple of big goose eggs and duck eggs as the prize eggs. The lucky kid finding them would get a whistle or sumthin. I never got the prize. (Hell I never won a damn thing in my life except the lottery for the draft and I had already reenlisted in the USAF when the draft board sent me the notification. I never did report though. I guess that makes me a draft dodger.)

Easter Sunday is just another day for me and sweetthing now adays. When the kids were little they always liked to dye the eggs but never cared much for hunting them..maybe because I hid them too good. And, none of the kids liked to eat the boiled eggs and pretty well stayed away from me the day after Easter. I liked them boiled eggs. They go down pretty good with beer and come out slow and easy and smelly the next day.

Enough of this ramble. Sweetthing wants to go to the village for a Sunday paper and I want another mug of jump start. And by the way, I do want to say thanks to you that read this bit of shit and wit. My site meter went over 60,000 during the night and I am still amazed that there are so many people who google for info and click on this place to get it. I bet they are surprised when they find out that palmetto bugs are just cockroaches on steroids.
